The Communist Party of Kenya

The Communist Party of Kenya (CPK) is a revolutionary political organization committed to the struggle for social justice, economic equality, and the emancipation of the working people of Kenya from all forms of exploitation and oppression.

Founded on the principles of scientific socialism and Pan-Africanism, CPK seeks to build a society where the resources and wealth of our nation serve the needs of all citizens rather than the profits of a few. Our party is guided by the revolutionary wisdom of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Vladimir Lenin, and Mao Zedong, adapted to the specific conditions of Kenyan and African society.

We draw inspiration from the struggles of our ancestors against colonial domination and our continued fight against neocolonialism and imperialism. The party was established to provide a clear political alternative to the corrupt and inefficient systems that have plagued our nation since independence.

CPK believes in the revolutionary potential of the Kenyan working class, the peasantry, and all progressive forces to transform society through organized struggle. We are committed to building a mass movement that can challenge the existing order and establish a truly democratic and socialist Kenya.

Vision & Mission

Our guiding principles for a revolutionary future

Our Vision

A democratic, socialist Kenya where economic justice prevails, where Pan-African unity is realized, and where the people collectively control the means of production, distribution, and exchange for the benefit of all.

We envision a Kenya free from exploitation, where every citizen has access to quality healthcare, education, housing, and meaningful employment. A nation where the wealth generated by the working people is reinvested in their communities rather than accumulated by a small elite.

Our Mission

  • To unite the working class, peasants, and all oppressed peoples of Kenya in the struggle for socialist transformation
  • To defend and expand the human rights of all Kenyans, particularly the working class and marginalized communities
  • To advocate for economic policies that prioritize people's needs over profits
  • To build Pan-African unity and solidarity with liberation movements across Africa
  • To educate and organize the masses for revolutionary consciousness and action

Core Values

The principles that guide our revolutionary practice

Collectivism

We believe in the power of collective action and collective ownership. The means of production should be owned and controlled by the working people for the benefit of all, not by private capitalists for profit.

Pan-Africanism

We are committed to the unity and solidarity of African peoples across the continent and in the diaspora. The liberation of Kenya is inseparable from the liberation of all Africa.

Social Justice

We fight for a society where wealth is distributed equitably, where there is no exploitation of person by person, and where all people have equal access to the resources of society.

Scientific Socialism

We apply the scientific method to understand and transform society. Our ideology is based on materialist analysis of Kenyan and global conditions, not utopian dreams or religious dogma.

Internationalism

We stand in solidarity with working people and liberation movements worldwide. The struggle against capitalism and imperialism is a global struggle that requires international coordination and mutual support.

Democracy

We believe in genuine people's democracy, where the masses participate meaningfully in decision-making. This goes beyond periodic elections to include grassroots organizing and people's power.

Our History

The revolutionary journey of the Communist Party of Kenya

Founding and Early Days

The Communist Party of Kenya was established by a group of revolutionary intellectuals and activists committed to the struggle for socialism and Pan-African unity. From its inception, the party dedicated itself to organizing the working class and peasantry for the struggle against neo-colonialism and capitalism.

The founding members recognized that Kenya's independence from British colonial rule in 1963 had not brought true liberation to the masses. Instead, a new class of neocolonial elites emerged who served the interests of foreign capital while the people continued to suffer poverty and exploitation.

Building the Party

CPK focused on building its organizational capacity, establishing cells in major towns and rural areas. The party developed its ideological education program and began publishing materials to spread revolutionary consciousness among the masses.

Through study circles, public meetings, and engagement with labor unions and community organizations, the party worked to raise political awareness and build a cadre of dedicated revolutionaries committed to the long struggle for socialism.

Growth and Expansion

The party expanded its reach and influence, establishing branches across the country and building alliances with other progressive forces. CPK became increasingly involved in labor struggles, land rights movements, and campaigns for democratic rights.

Our members participated actively in strikes, demonstrations, and community organizing efforts, always emphasizing the need for independent organization of the working class and the importance of building a revolutionary political party.

Present Day

Today, CPK continues to be at the forefront of the struggle for social justice in Kenya. The party participates in electoral politics while maintaining its revolutionary character and commitment to the ultimate goal of socialist transformation.

We continue to build our party, educate our members, and organize the masses. We face significant challenges from a reactionary establishment that benefits from the current system, but we remain confident that the contradictions of capitalism will create conditions for revolutionary change.

Ideological Foundation

The theoretical basis of our revolutionary practice

Marxism-Leninism

The Communist Party of Kenya is guided by Marxism-Leninism as our theoretical foundation. We study and apply the teachings of Marx, Engels, Lenin, and their successors to the specific conditions of Kenya and Africa.

Marx

Dialectical and historical materialism, critique of political economy

Engels

Scientific socialism, analysis of family, religion, and the state

Lenin

Imperialism, the party as vanguard, revolutionary strategy

African Marxism

We also draw inspiration from African revolutionary thinkers who have adapted Marxism to African conditions, including Amilcar Cabral, Frantz Fanon, Thomas Sankara, and Kwame Nkrumah. Their writings on neocolonialism, African unity, and revolutionary practice inform our understanding of the specific challenges facing our continent.

Organizational Structure

How the Communist Party of Kenya is structured

The Communist Party of Kenya operates on the principle of democratic centralism, which combines centralized leadership with democratic decision-making. This ensures that the party can act decisively while remaining accountable to its members.

Central Committee

The highest organ of the party between National Conferences. It directs the party's political line, organizes party work, and coordinates all party activities across the country.

National Conference

The supreme organ of the party, consisting of delegates from all party branches. It meets every five years to set party policy, elect the Central Committee, and determine the party's direction.

County Branches

The party is organized geographically, with branches in every county. These branches implement party decisions, organize local activities, and recruit new members.

Cell Structure

The basic unit of the party is the cell, consisting of 3-5 members. Cells meet regularly for study, discussion, and organizing work in their workplaces and communities.
